FILE INFO
CaptionBecause Diti desired a son who could kill Indra, she performed a strict vow, known as pumsavana, during her pregnancy. Indra became aware of her purpose, and offered her service daily just to observe her actions, the way a hunter becomes like a deer by covering his body with a deerskin. Finally, he found a fault in her observance of the vow. Taking this opportunity, Indra used his mystic powers to become smaller than an atom and entered her womb. He cut her embryo into seven pieces with his thunderbolt. When they did not die, but became seven separate living beings, he cut them again, each into seven pieces. They cried and told Indra they were his brothers. The next morning, Diti had forty-nine sons, who had been protected due to her worship of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and Diti was completely purified.
