The soul transmigrates from one type of body to another based on his mentality for enjoyment. Because of the material body, the living entity forgets his actual spiritual identity, part and parcel of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Covered by the mode of ignorance the living entity sometimes thinks he is male, sometimes a female, sometimes human, or demigod, or animal and so on. If the living entity's desires and consciousness are primarily in goodness, he is promoted in the next life to higher planetary systems; if in passion, he remains in the middle systems; and if in ignorance, he is pushed down the lower species of life.
