He wanted to be unconquerable, free from old age and disease, and not able to be killed by anyone.Hiranyakashipu performed severe penances with the aim to ask Lord Brahma for these benedictions. In the valley of Mandara Hill, Hiranyakashipu stood on his toes, keeping his arms up and looking toward the sky. As a result of his severe austerities, fire came from his head, which spread throughout the sky making both the upper and lower planets extremely hot. Waters were agitated and the surface of the globe trembled.
