FILE INFO
CaptionAs Lord Balarama enjoyed with his cowherd girlfriends in a garden by the Yamuna River, he smelled the sweet aroma of the Varuni liquor coming from the hollow of a nearby tree. He went to the tree and Balarama and His companions drank the sweet Varuni. At that time, kettledrums resounded in the sky, and the Gandharvas showered flowers. Lord Balarama and the cowherd girls wandered through the various forests. He then desired to play in the waters of the Yamuna, and He summoned her. Yamuna devi disregarded His command, thinking Him to be drunk. Angered by this, Balarama began to drag the river with the tip of His plow, saying " O sinful one disrespecting Me, you do not come when I call you but rather move only by your own whim. Therefore with the tip of My plow I shall bring you here in a hundred streams."
At this, the river-goddess Yamuna came and fell at the feet of Lord Balarama. Glorifying Him, she admitted her mistake as not understanding His position as the Supreme Godhead. Thus, Yamuna was forgiven and the Lord played in the water to His full satisfaction.

Painted in 1986.
