FILE INFO
CaptionAfter killing the brahmana, Vritrasura, Indra was chased by sin personified. He fled to the sky, but she chased him there and followed him everywhere he went. Then Indra hid in the Manasa-sarovara Lake, continuously thinking about how he could be relieved from the sinful reaction of killing a brahmana. He lived in the subtle fibers of the stem of a lotus for one-thousand years. The goddess of fortune, the wife of Lord Vishnu, resides in the lotus clusters of that lake, and therefore by her protection, Indra's sins could not affect him. By his worship of Lord Vishnu, Indra was relieved of all sinful reactions and was welcomed back to his position as the king of the heavens.

Painted in 1998.
