FILE INFO | Caption | The brahmanas created an illusion of a cow to fool Gautama. Gautama touched the false cow and it appeared to fall dead, so his guests cleverly pretended to be struck with horror over Gautama’s killing a cow and took this as their pretext for leaving. Gautama then strictly observed the prescribed atonement for such an inauspicious act, only afterwards discovering that the cow was simply an illusion and that he had been deceived. He angrily cursed the brahmanas and all their colleagues to lose their Vedic knowledge. In this way, knowledge turned to ignorance.
