In 1918 Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura accepted the goswami maharaja title and the renounced order of life. He was a powerful preacher of Vaishnavism and he traveled all over India, spreading the Krishna consciousness philosophy. When Srila Prabhupada (then Abhay Charan De) met Bhaktisiddanta, he was told to go to America to spread Krishna consciousness to the western countries.
